Ich bin zurück aus New York und habe viele Eindrücke mitgebracht.
Vorallem, was das Thema "Zero Waste" angeht.
Ein Mason Jar durch den Security Check und mit ins Flugzeug zu nehmen
ist scheinbar überhaupt kein Problem.
Auch im Flugzeug habe ich dafür grosse Komplimente bekommen.
Die Stewardess war sehr begeistert: "That´s so smart and eco-friendly"

Die sehr freundlichen Damen haben mir das Glas immer ganz voll gefüllt.
Das fand ich wirklich super!
In unserem Hotel war es auch super easy keinen Müll zu produzieren.
Es gab eine kleine Bar, an der es den ganzen Tag lang Tee, Kaffee und
Wasser umsonst gab.
Leider waren Milch und Zucker in kleinen Plastikgefässen/Tütchen.
Da musste ich dann eben auf Tee umsteigen. Ist ja aber nicht die schlechteste Variante.
Auch im Zimmer waren (zwar in Plastikflaschen, aber immerhin nachfüllbar)
Shampoo, Duschgel und Conditioner vorhanden. Ich habe mir die Inhaltsstoffe natürlich
gleich angesehen.
War aber alles natürlich und roch gut. Ich hatte zwar mein kleines Döschen
mit meinen Seifen mit, aber probieren wollte ich es dann doch. .. ;-)

Wenn man durch die Stadt läuft ist es allerdings manchmal wirklich sehr ernüchternd.
Die Müllsäcke stapeln sich am Strassenrand und es liegt teilweise wirklich viel Müll herum.
Zwar bemüht man sich, dies alles aufzusammeln, aber es ist schwer dagegen anzukommen.
Wirklich jeder Shop und Mensch kauft sein Essen in Plastikgefässen und trägt das in Plastiktüten durch die Gegend. Das landet dann wieder in einem der grossen, unrecycleten Mülleimern.
Selbst, wer bei Macy´s shoppt, bekommt seinen gekauften Artikel in einer Plastiktüte eingewickelt in eine andere Tüte gelegt.....Hä?!
Und den Discount auf mitgebrachte Gefässe, gibt es in NY bei Starbucks leider nicht.
Da wollten Sie mein Glas zuerst auch nicht befüllen. Ich habe dann aber nochmals freundlich drum gebeten, den Kaffee ins Glas zu füllen. Letztendlich hat es geklappt!
Es gibt tatsächlich aber auch einige wenige New Yorker, die mit ihren eigenen
Thermobechern durch die Stadt laufen.
Schön zu sehen ist auch, dass es in den meissten Restaurants dann doch Stoffservietten gibt.

Ein grosses Highlight war der Besuch im INTEGRAL YOGA NATURAL FOODS.
Das ist der "Supermarkt" in dem Lauren Singer (www.trashisfortossers.com) einkauft.
Die haben wirklich ALLES in Bulk. Das war wirklich schön und interessant zu sehen.
Man kann sogar seine eigene Peanutbutter machen. Herrlich!

Die New Yorker versuchen aber tatsächlich etwas zu tun.
Sei es eine Box, in die man seinen Zooplan zurückwerfen konnte oder die
"Tankstellen" für batteriebetriebene Autos.

Alles in allem hat das nur noch mehr gezeigt, dass es an der Zeit ist, etwas zu tun.
Und zwar JETZT!!!
Fangt mit kleinen Dingen an. Es ist nicht so schwer an einen Jutebeutel und
einen Thermobecher zu denken. Oder auf Strohhalme und Papierservietten zu verzichten.
Die Umwelt und euer Körper werden es euch danken!

Especially about zero waste.
To get a mason jar through security check and on a plane is obviously no problem.
I got a lot of compliments for my jar.

Another advantage havin´ a glass on a plane is that you drink a lot more.
They were so nice to me, filling it all up all the time.
Also in our hotel it was really easy beeing zero waste.
They had a "bar" with coffee, tea and water for free the whole day.
sad enough that milk and sugar was packed in plastik/paper.
Had to drink tea then, which is not the baddest thing, right!?
We also had shampoo/showergel and conditioner for free in our shower.
It was packed in plastic, but is refillable and smelled really good.
The ingredients were just natural.
Had to try it although I had my own soapbar with me.
Walking through the city is truely sobering sometimes.
There is garbage bags everywhere and a lot of trash on the streets.
They are trying hard to get all collected, but....
Every store is selling his stuff and food in plastic, putting it into a plastic bag
that people carry around and throwing it in one of the big, not recycled, trash cans.
Even buying stuff at Mavy´s is getting packed in a plastic bag and then packed in another bag.
What...!?
And that discount you get in germany for bringing your own reusable cup, is not giving at
ny starbucks. They didn´t even want to fill my glas at first. I kindly asked them again to do it.
And they did. Finally.
It is nice to see that there is people in NY running around with their own resuable cups.
And in most of the restaurants you get real napkins.

One big highlight was the visit of INTEGRAL YOGA NATURAL FOODS.
That is the supermarket where Lauren Singer (www.trashisfortossers.com) shops
her food in bulk. They really have EVERYTHING there in bulk.
You can even make your own peanutbutter yourself.
Really interessting to see!!! Loved it!

They really try to do something in New York.
See the Recycling Bin in the Central Parc Zoo (pic above) or the "gasstations" for
battery powered cars.

It all showed me, once again, that it is time to make a change. NOW!!!
Please try to make small changes. It´s not that hard thinking of a reusable bag or a cup.
And it´s not that hard to not take plastic straw or a paper napkin.
The environment and your body will thank you.
